Everton Under-18 manager Paul Tait has revealed that hard work, fighting and leadership are just a few of the traits he hopes to see in his young squad this season.
While many of the squad from last year have joined the David Unsworth and the Under 23s, Tait is now working with players who are starting their freshman scholarships and will show them what’s to come.
Helping them adjust to the demands of professional football, Tait, himself a former Blues trainee, admitted it may come as a surprise to some of the youngsters.
Speaking to the official Everton website, he said: “Every day now is about working on the mentality, behaviors and values of the players.
“It’s hard work, dedication and dedication that we are looking for.

“As a coach I just try to help them in any way I can to adjust, because getting fully professional can be a bit of a shock for boys sometimes.
“They will be doing tremendous amounts of physical labor, more than they’ve ever been used to. You want to see real resilience and fight because it’s gonna be hard [in pre-season].
“You’re looking for boys who dig deep and show courage and determination. It is then contagious. If you have leaders in the group who display these qualities, then you hope the others will follow.
“It’s the psychological side and then there are the physical demands, because they train every day.
“These factors [mentality and fitness work] will be the focus of the first six weeks of the preseason, and then it’s going to be a matter of tactically integrating what we want to do – although obviously we’ll be spreading that tactical information throughout our training sessions and games. friendly.
