While there may be questions regarding depth at the quarterback for Clemson, there certainly aren’t any questions regarding the top of the depth chart.
As Trevor Lawrence prepares to begin his NFL career, talented sophomore DJ Uiagalelei is expected to take over as the Tigers’ starting quarterback next season. By all accounts, Uiagalelei is more than ready to step into the limelight.
After Clemson’s annual spring game, head coach Dabo Swinney said the coaching staff wanted Uiagalelei to focus this summer on building a solid spring for the quarterback.
“I just got back to work, you know,” Swinney said. “I mean, really take ownership of that offense. You know, come back through the facility, come back over all spring. It really, really had a good spring.”
Uiagalelei enters his first season as a Tigers starting quarterback with a mountain of expectations on his shoulders and Swinney said one of the first steps in meeting those expectations was to be able to become one of the leaders in the game. ‘team.
“We’re talking about trying to be the elite and helping them achieve that goal,” Swinney said. “He’s a really good player, but he helps him become the best version of him. So, looking back on all his mistakes, you know, really studying some of the situations, really asserting himself as a leader. , something he didn’t have to do last year.
“He has to lead the skills and drills. He hasn’t really had the chance to have the proper summer skills and drills last year. So I’m excited that we have the chance to do these. next four months. “
Another thing the coaching team wants Uiagalelei to focus on is dedicating themselves to being as mentally prepared as possible. They also want him to take a new step in his physical development.
“I’m just going to do it,” Swinney said. “Studying, you know, going through all the scout reports, studying our opponents. Again, get a head start on some of this stuff. Put his body in the best possible position. He’s doing a good job. is a real freshman, his body is not as mature as it will be as he continues to work in the weight room, nutrition etc.
As Clemson heads into the summer, Swinney said the Tigers have what they believe is a great plan for Uiagalelei and knowing what the young quarterback expects of himself there is no concern. to get the job done.
“So really, we make a plan for him, execute the plan,” Swinney said. “But I can tell you this DJ, whatever you say to him, it’s going to pale in comparison to what he expects of himself. And I like it about him, he’s a grinder.”
